About the British Motor Club of the Cape Fear.
Up to and during the 60's, the main sports car focus in the Wilmington, NC area was on racing and rallying. SCCA was the only game in town and eventually even that outlet became almost non existent. In order to hang out with other car nuts who liked to tinker with SU carburettors and Lucas electrics you pretty much had to drive at least a hundred miles.
Finally a small but tenacious group of
British car enthusiasts got tired of watching the hot rodders and Saturday
night cruisers have all the fun and began to scour the area for known British
car owners. They even went so far as to chase people down who were seen
driving a British car and do a little arm twisting in the name of the hobby.
After a few sputtering starts, in 1998 a solid core of around fifteen people founded the club and chose the first slate of officers. The club has grown slowly but steadily since then with a current roster of one hundred and fifteen enthusiastic family members.
Monthly gatherings are held on the third Thursday of each month in order to take care of club business and planning. Currently, meetings are held at Temptations restaurant & Deli, Oleander Rd. Wilmington, NC at 6:00 pm if you wish to eat with us. The Actual proceedings begin at 7:00pm. Be sure to check our current newsletter to see if the location has changed for the month.
In addition to the monthly meeting gathering, we try and plan a second monthly outing that will appeal to as many people as possible. Rallys, overnight and weekend excursions, tech. sessions, car shows and any excuse to have a party is always welcome.
Our membership base includes people with many varied talents. Of course there is the hard core group of restorers and motor heads. What car club would be complete without them and they are more than willing to share their knowledge and talents. On the whole we are a dedicated, friendly group of British car lovers who like nothing better than to welcome new people into the fold and generally hang around together.
